Aspire, Assess, Position: A Blueprint for Career Growth

Recently, I had an insightful discussion with a seasoned professional planning to transition back into a full-time role after nearly eight years dedicated to running his own startup. This conversation reaffirmed my belief that career planning is not only about setting aspirations but also about strategically positioning oneself for success.

Through my coaching experience on igotanoffer, I've learned that a structured, deliberate approach can make all the difference—whether you’re starting out, looking to grow, or planning a comeback after an entrepreneurial journey.

The AAP Framework: Aspire, Assess, Position. To guide individuals through this process, I often recommend using the AAP Framework—Aspire, Assess, and Position. Here’s how it works:

  1. Aspire

  • Define Your Goals: Clearly identify what you want to achieve in your career. This could be a specific role, industry, or level of responsibility.

  • Visualize Success: Envision where you want to be in the future. Creating a vivid mental picture helps shape a clear and focused career path.

  1. Assess

  • Self-Evaluation: Analyze your current skills, experiences, and strengths. Understand what you bring to the table and where improvement is needed.

  • Skill Assessment Tools: Use various tools to gauge your abilities, including CliftonStrengths, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and DiSC Assessment.

  • Skills Inventory & Reflection: Explore resources like MindTools, Skill Matrix Templates, and MuchSkills to visually represent your skillset.

  • 360-Degree Feedback: Gather feedback from peers, supervisors, and mentors using tools like SurveyMonkey and Qualtrics.

  • Professional Certifications & Tests: Leverage platforms like LinkedIn Skill Assessments, Coursera, and edX to validate and enhance your expertise.

  • Market Research: Investigate industry trends to understand the most in-demand skills and qualifications.

  • Feedback: Seek advice from mentors, peers, or career coaches to gain insights into your readiness for the desired career move.

  1. Position

  • Personal Branding: Craft a compelling personal brand that highlights your unique value proposition. This includes your resume, LinkedIn profile, and professional presence.

  • Networking: Build and leverage your professional network. Connect with industry professionals to gain insights and identify opportunities.

  • Strategic Applications: Tailor your job applications to align with your aspirations and the needs of potential employers.

The Three Pillars of Career Success

In addition to using the AAP Framework, there’s a powerful concept I always emphasize: the alignment of three critical elements. Think of them as the three pillars of lasting success:

  1. Passion: You must enjoy what you do. When you love your work, it becomes a source of energy and fulfillment, not just a job.

  2. Proficiency: You must be good at what you do. Mastery comes from skill, talent, and dedication.

  3. Relevance: Your work must be valuable to the organization. Alignment with company goals is essential for growth and recognition.

Conclusion The AAP Framework—Aspiration, Assessment, and Positioning—provides a structured approach to making strategic career moves. By defining your aspirations, thoroughly assessing your strengths, and effectively positioning yourself in the job market, you can navigate your career path with confidence and purpose.
